Theories of Ethnicity makes available some of the most probing considerations of such topics as the concept of ethnicity, melting pot and pluralism, race and race problems, migration and marginality, identity, assimilation and antagonistic acculturation, intermarriage (from 'connubium' to 'miscegenation'), generations, cultural relativism, insiders and outsiders, ethnic emergence, boundary-construction and maintenance, symbolic ethnicity, and the role of power relations for ethnicity. These essays by sociologists, anthropologists, psychologists, historians, philosophers, and literary authors have set the intellectual agenda for what is now called 'ethnic studies'.
