On 27 February 1890, the Labour Representation Committee was formed to campaign for the election of working class representatives to parliament. One hundred years on Labour is in government with an overwhelming majority. This book celebrates and critically assesses the Labour Party's role in shaping events of the 20th century. It brings together academics from a variety of disciplines to examine the history of the party's development. Each chapter includes contributions in the form of commentary and analysis from former Labour leaders, cabinet ministers and backbench MPs. Contributors include: Michael Foot, Denis Healey, David Owen, Keith Laybourn, Robert Taylor, Steve Ludlam, Nick Ellison, Clare Short and Austin Mitchell, among others.

BRIAN BRIVATI is Reader in History at Kingston University. His previous publications include Hugh Gaitskell (1996) which was selected as a book of the year by Roy Hattersley, Tony Benn, Donald Watt and Ian Aikten, and Lord Goodman (1999). - RICHARD HEFFERNAN is a Lecturer in Government and Politics at the Open University. He has taught previously at the London School of Economics and Political Science and the University of California, Los Angeles. He is the author of New Labour and Thatcherism and co-author, with Mike Marqusee, of Defeat from the Jaws of Victory: Inside Kinnock's Labour Party.
