Orientalism Abroad

"Orientalism Abroad" shows "orientalism" remains alive and well today both in cultural encounter (tourism, primarily) and warfare. Using Edward Said as a foundation, Gregory considers the long orientalist tradition of tourism, particularly in Egypt. He weaves this into a discussion of the current wars in the region, from Israel to Iraq and closes with a penetrating analysis of "states of exception" including Abu Ghraib and Baghram. Gregory show that while cultural encounters and warfare are hardly new, the new geographies resulting from current colonial projects are unique in history.
