Argues that the key to understanding the level on which consciousness operates is the feedback loop. This work talks about the idea of strange loops - feedback loops, which exist on two levels of meaning, a theory, which Kurt Godel employed in the mathematical statements constructed for his famous Incompleteness Theorem.

Douglas Hofstadter is College Professor of Cognitive Science and Computer Science at Indiana University. His previous books are Godel, Escher, Bach (0-1402-8920-8, Penguin), which won the Pulitzer Prize for General non-fiction, Metamagical Themas (1981), The Mind's I (1985), Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies (1995), Le Ton Beau de Marot (1997) and Eugene Onegin (1999).
