When smart, successful, twenty-six-year-old Rachel Block loses her way in life, she takes a job as a bartender in her old Brooklyn neighbourhood - much to her parents' chagrin. Until now Rachel has always been the perfect daughter, getting good grades and dating nice Jewish boys. But as her 'quarter-life crisis' begins, she finds herself pulled in new and unexpected directions. One night she meets Hank Powell, an iconoclastic screenwriter twice her age, and finds herself falling head over heels. Suddenly she's reassessing her values, her surroundings and everything she's ever believed about the 'right' kind of relationship. Meanwhile, her interactions with her father have become increasingly strange: he's doing sit-ups and listening to The Strokes. Is he having his own (midlife) crisis? Something's up...and Rachel's convinced it might be her old man's libido. From one of America's smartest and sauciest young writers - a female, Gen X Philip Roth - "My Old Man" is an outrageous comedy about sex in the city's bawdiest borough.

Bret Easton Ellis "My Old Man" is breezy, enjoyable, and slightly dirty fun. It's a party -- the book ambles along, catches you off guard, scenes play out gradually at just the right length, and reading it is like hanging with a good friend whom something interesting happened to the night before. Amy Sohn knows this world so well that just about every word rings true. It's a heartfelt love letter to Brooklyn.
