Rather than cold hard facts and faceless engagement descriptions this book, perhaps more than any other about D-Day, simply lets the soldiers tell the tale. Patched and moulded from over a thousand first hand accounts (from both sides) Ambrose does a superb job of keeping things moving along at a great pace. (You'll find yourself on page 200 in what seems like minutes.) This is the author in his element. He uses clear and graspable descriptions to tell the story of one of the most important (and complex) events of the 20th century. It may be his finest book about the war - which is saying something. A great read and a must for anyone interested in WWII from the perspective of those who fought it.

Ambrose, leading World War II historian, was the author of numerous books on history including the Number 1 bestselling BAND OF BROTHERS, D-DAY (on which SAVING PRIVATE RYAN was based) PEGASUS BRIDGE and WILD BLUE. He is founder of the Eisenhower Center and the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans. He died in 2002.
