Merseyside Embroiderers Guild:This book gives a very interesting overview of designs and techniques by contemporary Felt Artists. It is so interesting to see the thought processes behind the artists work as well as their methods of using fibres. The examples shown are beautiful and inspiring and there is plentiful information about the making process to encourage anyone with an interest in constructing fabric from scratch to have a go. The Gallery of designs shows items as diverse as clothing, boots(!) hats and jewellery. This is a good read for all felt motivated textile people.Workshop on the Web:Felt is really 'in' just now and lots of books are appearing on the subject. This one is just a little bit different in that there is more to the design and the projects are more interesting than usual. They are all by different artists, giving a wider dimension to the book. A box at the beginning of each project gives information on the techniques used. The embellisher machine lends itself to felting, so this might be a good book for moving on from fabrics. In the introduction, we learn about felting around a ball, which is then used to make hats - definitely a step above the usual felted hats and look as though they would be great fun to make. A lot of three-dimensional work is considered in the projects: more hats, vessels, jewellery, panels, garlands and a lovely cascading collar. Three-dimensional flowers with wired edged are fun and somehow manage to make felt look floaty and ethereal. There are also waistcoats, dresses, and a very nice cape. Although I'm not a fan of projects in general, these all have the purpose of teaching new techniques. A section on the basics of felt is limited to a couple of pages at the back of the book, so this it probably not for absolute beginners, although all the techniques are explained well.
