'It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.' This is the opening sentence of the most influential novel of the twentieth century, in English or in any of the sixty or more other languages which boast a translation. George Orwell (1903-1950) served with the Imperial Police in Burma, fought with the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War, and was a member of the Home Guard and a writer for the BBC during World War II. He is the author of many works of non-fiction and fiction.
