Refugees are people who have fled from persecution in their home country, often leaving behind them everything they have. Unaccompanied refugee children, separated from their parents or carers, alone among adult strangers in a strange land, are the most vulnerable of all. This disturbing new report reveals how these children are treated when they arrive seeking protection in the United Kingdom. Most of them come from war-torn parts of the world such as Somalia, Afghanistan and Kosovo, but they rarely find a safe haven here. Disbelieved, detained and discriminated against, unaccompanied refugee children are seven times less likely to receive official refugee status in the UK than someone aged 25-29. The UK has even attempted to limit its legal obligations specifically in respect of refugee children, by entering a reservation to the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child.
