The contributors to this book focus on selected topical issues of interest to a wide range of professionals in the areas of nutrition and health. One chapter assesses the cariogenicity of Sorbitol - a commonly used sweetener in special dietetic products for diabetics and in sugar-free confectionery and medicine. A further article investigates the claim that moderate alcohol use reduces the risk of coronary heart disease. Following this, insights are provided into dietary intake and metabolic parameters in adult men competing at the limits of athletic performance. The fourth contribution addresses the problems associated with evaluating the nutritional impact of agricultural development programmes. Finally, the impact of cash cropping on food consumption and nutritional status in West Africa is examined from an historical perspective.
