The present volume is dedicated to Erling Sverdrup. His pioneering role in the cultivation of a statistical milieu in Norway is due to a combination of historical circumstances and personal abilities. He was appointed Professor of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistic at the University of Oslo in 1953, at a time when statistics was in a state of infancy in Norway. Through three decades he served in this position with an unfailing will to carry his point in scientific and educational work. Inevitably, he created a tradition in actuarial and statistical science. The festschrift presents a cross-sectional survey of some current activities within this tradition. It reflects the impact of Sverdrup's versatile research activities and the style set by his scholarly conduct and spirit of inquiry.
