Academic Writing

Academic Writing offers a guided process-writing course in the most common expository text types and genres, including research papers, that students need at university and in their future professional careers. In addition, one chapter is devoted to the problem of creating coherent texts and another to business correspondence, including job application letters. The third edition has been thoroughly revised.
More than twenty essays and articles offer extensive reading practice. Close and guided reading of these texts will help students become better critical and analytical readers, which in turn will support their own writing. At the same time they will improve their general language proficiency in English.
Academic Writing is informed by the insight that writing is a thinking tool; that writing can be a tool for language development, for critical thinking and, consequently, for learning in all disciplines.

Christine Räisänen is associate professor at Chalmers University of Technology. She has developed and taught academic-writing and technical-communication courses in a wide range of disciplines in academia and industry. She is the author of The Conference Forum as a System of Genres (1999) and is currently doing research within the fields of organisational discourse and knowledge management. Lennart Björk, professor emeritus at Göteborg University, has been involved in international writing instruction since the early 1980s. He is co-author of The Writing Process (1988), Sammanhang i Text (1989, 1994), Tanke-, tal- och skrivprocesser (1999), Tänka, tala, skriva (2003) and co-editor of Teaching Academic Writing in European Higher Education (2003).
