British and American Culture 1500-1945 This book is a readable guide to the main ideas and ideals that have inspired the peoples of Britain and the United States from the Renaissance in the 16th century down to the end of the Second World War. It is not a history of these two nations in the ordinary sense of that word, but rather a history of the ideas, beliefs, hopes and fears that have shaped their experience and identities during the last five centuries. Through such a history the reader will gain a new insight into the characters of these two related countries as they are manifest today in the British and American ways of life.
