Organized with the generous support of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the University of York, UK, RoboSoft brought together more than 100 scientists, engineers and practitioners from all over the world, representing 70 international institutions. Theintended readership includes researchers and practitioners with all levels of experience interested in working in the area of robotics, and software engineering more generally. The Pernambuco School on Software Engineering (PSSE) 2004 was the ?rst in a series of events devoted to the study of advanced computer science and to the promotion of international scienti?c collaboration. The main theme in 2004 was re?nement (or rei?cation). Re?nement describes the veri?able relationship between a speci?cation and its implementation; it also describes the process of discoveringappropriateimplementations,givena speci?cation.Thus,in oneway or another, re?nement is at the heart of the programming process, and so is the major daily activity of everyprofessionalsoftwareengineer. The Summer School and its proceedings were intended to give a detailed tutorial introduction to the scienti?c basis of this activity. These proceedings record the contributions from the invited lecturers. Each chapter is the result of a thorough revision of the initial notes provided to the participants of the school. The revision was inspired by the synergy generated by the opportunity for the lecturers to present and discuss their work among themselves, and with the school’s attendees. The editors have tried to produce a coherent view of the topic by harmonizing these contributions, smoothing out di?erences in notation and approach, and providing links between the lectures. We apologize to the authors for any errors introduced by our extensive editing. Although the chapters are linked in severalways, each one is su?ciently se- contained to be read in isolation. Nevertheless, Chap. 1 should be read ?rst by those interested in an introduction to re?nement.

A Step Towards Verified Software Worries about the reliability of software are as old as software itself; techniques for allaying these worries predate even James King’s 1969 thesis on “A program verifier. ” What gives the whole topic a new urgency is the conjunction of three phenomena: the blitz-like spread of software-rich systems to control ever more facets of our world and our lives; our growing impatience with deficiencies; and the development—proceeding more slowly, alas, than the other two trends—of techniques to ensure and verify software quality. In 2002 Tony Hoare, one of the most distinguished contributors to these advances over the past four decades, came to the conclusion that piecemeal efforts are no longer sufficient and proposed a “Grand Challenge” intended to achieve, over 15 years, the production of a verifying compiler: a tool that while processing programs would also guarantee their adherence to specified properties of correctness, robustness, safety, security and other desirable properties. As Hoare sees it, this endeavor is not a mere research project, as might normally be carried out by one team or a small consortium of teams, but a momentous endeavor, comparable in its scope to the successful mission to send a man to the moon or to the sequencing of the human genome.

The now well-established series of International Colloquia on Theoretical - pects of Computing (ICTAC) brings together practitionersand researchersfrom academia, industry and government to present research results, and exchange experience and ideas. Beyond these scholarly goals, another main purpose is to promote cooperation in research and education between participants and their institutions, from developing and industrial countries.
