Hubert Selby, Jr. (1928-2004) was born in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 15, he dropped out of school and went to sea with the merchant marines. While at sea he was diagnosed with lung disease. With no other way to make a living, he decided to try writing: 'I knew the alphabet. Maybe I could be a writer.' In 1964 he completed his first book, Last Exit to Brooklyn, which has since become a cult classic. In 1966, it was the subject of an obscenity trial in the UK. His other books include The Room, The Demon, Requiem for a Dream, The Willow Tree and Waiting Period. The five-month Battle of the Hürtgen Forest (September 1944–February 1945) cost the U.S. Army more than 34,000 casualties, a tremendous number, and yet historians have rarely given it the attention it deserves, lending it the epithet “the Forgotten Sacrifice.” The reasons are clear. Not only was this one of the bloodiest and most disastrous U.S. campaigns of the war, its strategic importance was eclipsed twice over: first by Field Marshal Montgomery’s Operation Market-Garden, which aimed to open a route of advance into Germany via the capture of a series of Dutch bridges, and second, by Germany’s surprise attack in mid-December through the Ardennes in what became known as the Battle of the Bulge. By September 1944 the Third Reich was under constant attack by Allied bombers and suffering an onslaught by the Red Army to the east. The Nazi high command struggled for ideas to reduce the effect of the ceaseless bombing and thereby create some breathing space to build and strengthen their new weapon: jet-propelled aircraft.
