This concise overview of the work of designer Alvin Lustig (1915-55) focuses on his book covers, vehicles for his bold graphic experimentation. Here is a colorful and well-researched representation of Alvin Lustig's book cover designs that were created primarily for New Directions Books and Noonday Press, among others. Lustig used the book cover as a vehicle of his bold graphic experimentation that was enhanced by a lifelong collaboration with James Laughlin, founder and publisher of New Directions Books. Ned Drew and Paul Sternberger cite many passages from these letters of correspondence betweenLustig and Laughlin which include a range of topics from the early 1940s up to Lustig's untimely death in 1955.As a modern designer, Lustig's interests spanned many fields: architectural, industrial and interior design which served as an expression of his deeply held convictions. For him, the designer was not a single-minded specialist, but an integrator of many art forms-and simultaneously, as he saw it, a spokesman for social change.NED DREW teaches at Rutgers University-Newark and is also the director of The Design Consortium, a student/teacher run design studio that focuses on non-profit, community-based projects.Paul Sternberger is an Associate Professor of Art History at Rutgers University-Newark. He is co-author with colleague Ned Drew of By It's Cover: Modern American Book Cover Design.

'On a subject that has in fact been written, sung and talked about extensively, Meijer manages to avoid all clichés. The Limits of my Language shows, despite the title, what language is capable of'Trouw (five stars)Much has been written about the treatment of depression, but relatively little about its meaning. In this strikingly original book, Eva Meijer weaves her own experiences and the insights of thinkers from Freud to Foucault and Woolf into a moving and incisive evocation of the condition. She explores how depression can make us grow out of shape over time, like a twisted tree, how we can sometimes remould ourselves in conversation with others, and how to move on from our darkest thoughts. The Limits of My Language is both a razor-sharp analysis of depression and a steadfast search for the things great and small - from philosophy and art to walking a dog or sitting quietly with a cat - that make our lives worth living.

As hikers explore the woodland coves, creek-side trails, wooded hilltops, and rocky mountains contained in this guidebook, it’s easy to forget that every trail in this book is in a suburban neighborhood. While each of the more than sixty hikes described by Jonah McDonald and Zana Pouncey is within an hour drive of downtown, these hidden suburban forests transport hikers so much farther away. Each route includes maps, complete hiking directions, trailhead location, and even public transit access information. There’s no need to drive to the mountains to get out on the trail. Hiking Metro Atlanta’s Hidden Forests lets you visit wildlife areas, nature preserves, and historic sites without venturing far beyond the perimeter.
