Brown and Hodgson present a new English edition of Hegel's 1822-3 lectures on the philosophy of world history. Here he sets out his vision of the development of reason, spirit, and culture in human history, as it advances inexorably towards the establishment of a political state of free, fully self-conscious individuals and just institutions.

Nicholas Walker, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews In this and earlier volumes Peter Hodgson and his collaborators have in many ways set new standards of clarity and consistency in the presentation and translation of Hegel's writings and lectures . . . the present edition provides an excellent starting point for the serious study of Hegel's unfolding concept of 'philosophical' history in his Berlin period.
