An insightful discussion of the phenomenon of standardization in organizations and society at large. The authors regard standards as a form of regulation enabling a higher degree of global order in the modern world, and argue that they represent an alternative to markets and hierarchies as a mode of social organization. They facilitate coordination and cooperation on a global scale, creating similarities and homogeneity even among peoples and organizations that are quite different. This book provides an in-depth examination of standardization in different arenas.

W. Richard Scott, Professor Emeritus of Sociology, Stanford University In this insightful book, Brunsson, Jacobsson and associates propose that standardization provides a viable alternative to market forces and to organizational forms as an institutional arrangement for coordinating and controlling complex exchanges. Their arguments illuminate important facets of current developments in our rapidly globalizing world.

American Journal of Sociology The authors do a masterful job of highlighting why the study of standardization merits research attention. . . . this is a valuable book that will guide many future empirical studies.
