In a first of its kind collection, The Theater of Teaching and the Lessons of Theater offers a riveting array of perspectives, approaches, and dialogues exploring the intersections between theater as text, theater as performance, and theater as pedagogy. The essays in this book advance the idea that in their interactive qualities, both teaching and theater have profoundly political and social dimensions. Scholars and teachers from a variety of backgrounds present in this volume an intentionally improvisational and fluid examination meant to offer a model of how to discuss and engage in the practice of theater and teaching, ultimately interweaving the two. The Theater of Teaching will be equally useful to teachers, students, and practitioners of theater.

In the course of my twenty-year career in academe I have rarely come across a collection of essays so various in approach and configuration, and yet so unified in spirit, so equal in their devotion to the subject of Theater. Whether they deal with theater as literature, they are interested in theater as performance, or they approach it from the pedagogical standpoint, and whether they discuss dramatic theory or address instead the practices of drama, all the contributors to this volume believe, quite firmly and passionately, in the teaching value, indeed in the life-changing power of Theater. Their articles illustrate the ways in which they avail themselves of that power in their work, to make a difference in the classroom and/or on the stage... -- Francesca Savoia In the course of my twenty-year career in academe I have rarely come across a collection of essays so various in approach and configuration, and yet so unified in spirit, so equal in their devotion to the subject of Theater.
