In Viewer Discretion Advised Jeffrey McCall gets right to the heart of why the mass media are of such concern to so many people. He illuminates the controversial issues of media sex, superficial news, a media-hijacked political system, lack of protection for children, and the limits of First Amendment protections of speech. McCall writes with a clear, engaging style so that everyone can read this intriguing bookand everyone should read it. -- W. James Potter, University of California, Santa Barbara; author, Media Literacy and The 11 Myths of Media Violence Jeff McCall's searing book raises painful issues that we allas Americans, as journalists, and as consumers of mass mediashould be examining and for which we should be demanding answers and change. Though I disagree personally and professionally with important parts of his analysis, I applaud his journey into my world and the spotlight of his challenging questions. -- John McWethy, former National Security Correspondent, ABC News McCall offers practical advice on how Americans can insist on more responsible media and better control of their own viewing habits and those of their children. * Booklist * Highly recommended.
