    En av de absolut bästa berättelser jag läst om en och av en frontsoldats öde under Andra världskriget. Till skillnad mot kända officerares vanligtvis tillrättalagda och må hända förskönande självbiografier beskriver Guy Sajer kriget från ett Frontsvins perspektiv i Nazitysk tjänst i ett av Wehrmachts elitförband som mot all förmodan gång på gång överlevde där hans kollegor en efter en gick under. Boken är i samma anda som "Helvetet på jorden" av R.I. Jordbruen och Hans Roths "Dagbok från östfronten".
