de Havilland Mosquito: The Original Multirole Combat Aircraft covers the creation, design and development of the beloved Mosquito that was built in Britain, Canada and Australia, followed by service during the Second World War in Britain, Europe and Asia. The Mosquito was initially designed as a twin Rolls-Royce Merlin-powered unarmed bomber with a crew of two and was constructed mainly of wood, which was a non-strategic material using unskilled labor. Philip Birtles started work at the de Havilland Aircraft Company in September 1957 as an engineering apprentice. Following completion of his training, he was appointed as John Cunningham's PA, the famous Second World War night fighter ace. During the remainder of his career in the aerospace industry, he had a number of marketing positions until taking early retirement when Hatfield Aerodrome finally closed at the end of 1993. He spent over forty years as a trustee of the de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre and has written over thirty-five books.
