It has been estimated that demand for wheat could increase by up to 60% by 2050. There is an urgent need to increase yields in the face of such challenges as climate change, threats from pests and diseases and the need to make cultivation more resource-efficient and sustainable. Drawing on an international range of expertise, this collection focuses on ways of improving the cultivation of wheat at each step in the value chain, from breeding to post-harvest storage. Volume 2 reviews research in improving cultivation techniques. Chapters in Part 1 review topics such as variety selection, seed and root growth, water and nutrient management. Part 2 goes on to discuss broader issues such as sustainable intensification and organic cultivation. The final part of the collection covers ways of improving wheat cultivation in the developing world. Achieving sustainable cultivation of wheat Volume 2: Cultivation techniques will be a standard reference for cereal scientists in universities, government and other research centres and companies involved in wheat cultivation. It is accompanied by Volume 1 which reviews breeding, quality traits, pests and diseases.

Dr Peter Langridge is Emeritus Professor of Plant Science at the University of Adelaide and former CEO of the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics (ACPFC). Professor Langridge is also Chair of the Scientific Board of the Wheat Initiative set up to coordinate international research in wheat. Dr Peter J. Gregory is Emeritus Professor of Global Food Security at the University of Reading, UK, where he was previously Professor of Soil Science. Amongst many distinctions, Professor Gregory is a former President of the International Society of Root Research (ISRR) as well as former Chief Executive of the Scottish Crop Research Institute (now part of the James Hutton Institute) and East Malling Research (now NIAB-EMR). He is internationally-renowned for his research in soil and crop root science. Dr. Beres is a research scientist at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Lethbridge Research Centre in Alberta. Dr. Beres established an agronomy program in 2000 and leads several multi-disciplinary projects developing innovative and integrated crop management systems. Dr. Beres publishes in the areas of agronomy and crop science and has been the author or co-author of 64 peer-reviewed research articles and 2 book chapters. Dr. Beres is Past-President and Fellow (2017) of the Canadian Society of Agronomy, an active member of the American Societies for Agronomy, Crops and Soils. He serves as Co- Editor-In-Chief for the Canadian Journal of Plant Science, Associate Editor for Agriculture and Environmental Letters, and received the CJPS 2014 Outstanding Associate Editor award. Dr. Beres has several international collaborations and represents Canada on the Research Committee of the global Wheat Initiative, where he also recently developed and Chairs an Expert Working Group for global agronomy wheat research. Professor Theib Oweis is Director of the Water, Land and Ecosystems Program (WLEP) at the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA). He is a jointly appointed Distinguished Professor - International Platform for Dryland Research and Education at Tottori University, Japan. Professor Oweis is widely regarded as one of the world's leading authorities on water management in agriculture.
