Institutional Racism in Higher Education

This book reports on cutting-edge research on racism in higher education - a matter that has received far less attention than racism in primary and secondary schools. The result of a project funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England and led by the editors, the book examines the evidence of institutional racism in higher education and prepares for the forthcoming Web-based guide to assist institutional change.

Ian Law is Director of the Centre for Ethnicity and Racism Studies and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Leeds. Deborah Phillips is Deputy Directory of the Centre for Ethnicity and Racism Studies and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography, University of Leeds. Laura Turney was a Research Fellow at the University of Leeds working on the Institutional Racism in Higher Education Toolkit Project in 2001-2003. She is presently a Principal Researcher with the Scottish Executive. Les Back is Professor of Sociology, Goldsmiths College, University of London. Colin Clark is Lecturer in Sociology and Romani studies in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology, University of Newcastle upon Tyne. William Gulam is Senior Lecturer in the Revans Institute for Action Learning and Research, Salford University. Barnor Hesse is Senior Lecturer in Sociology, University of East London. Joyce Hill is Director of the Higher Education Equality Challenge Unit and Visiting Professor in the School of English, University of Leeds. Shirin Housee is Senior Lecturer in Sociology, University of Wolverhampton. Ozcan Konur is a social researcher: His recent study was into the emerging public policy issues on access to higher education by disabled students. Emmanuell Kusemamuriwo is Ethnicity and Diversity Policy Adviser in the Equality Challenge Unit. Andrew Pilkington is acting Head of Social Studies, University College, Northampton. Nirmal Purwar is Senior Research Fellow in the School of Social Studies, University College, Northampton. Jacques Rangasamy is Lecturer in the School of Art and Design, University of Salford. Salman Sayyid is University Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Leeds. Sanjay Sharma is Lecturer in the School of Cultural and Innovation Studies, University of East London.
