Monsters For Tea, by author Nancy Terrell, is a lighthearted picture book story about a young girl named Luna who is afraid of the dark and awakes frightened by the thought of monsters. What follows is a grand tea party at midnight where Luna learns her monster guests are not scary at all but offer courage, comfort and laughter to put her at ease and make sweet dreams come true. It's a reminder that children have the potential to overcome their fears. The rhythmic text is charming to read aloud and enjoyed by children and grown-ups alike.
Monsters For Tea is meant to be silly and fun but the inspiration is a result of Nancy's daughter's experience with night terror's which are more dramatic than nightmares. A child might suddenly sit up in bed and shout out or scream in distress, seemingly awake but inconsolable. Fortunately, most children outgrow night terrors by age 12.
