historical fiction is a literary genre that provides the writer with tremendous scope and robert barclay doesn’t waste that potential. the story paints a graphic picture of the mayhem and dislocation that war brings to a civilian population, and provides the readers with intriguing insights…

this is a wonderful tale of fiction. the historical events in the novel are accurate and extremely detailed. the intrigue [barclay] draws through jacob’s espionage assignments is a real strength of this novel. while music is clearly the trumpeter’s main love, this 17th century James Bond has little time to engage in it. This fun and historically informed novel paints a picture of a 17th century trumpeter in a way that no… scholarly brass history books can.
