Analyses of word order in German often consider information structure as the most important syntactic factor. As this book demonstrates, however, prosodic, sentence-semantic, and core syntactic factors are better suited for describing the forms and functions of the middle field of the German sentence. Therefore, contrary to a long-held research tradition, this analysis rejects a syntactic representation of information structure.
