This study is a labour of love for Russian literature scholars Ben Hellman and Andrei Rogachevskii. Chock-full of fascinating and often witty footnotes, the main text provides a thorough account of the film's production. The Scotland-Russia Forum Review Wrede's film is important - for a long time the only film adaptation of Solzhenitsyn's work and often moving. Hellman and Rogachevskii's book is a valuable reminder and hopefully will encourage more interest. Society for Co-operation in Russian and Soviet Studies Information Digest Hellman and Rogachevskii's book can be a valuable resource for scholars who study either Wrede's films or Solzhenitsyn's literary text. It is a well-researched case study of a film adaptation based on a controversial literary text. Slavic and East European Journal
