The events of Biberman's Couturier actually took place in Odessa in the 90s, although everything was much quieter, simpler and less peaceful. "Uncle Shaya" absorbed several different stories at once, which made the old man no less multifaceted than the famous Mukhina creation. The following story's hero, the Chekist Smolyansky, actually lived in Odessa, worked as the head of a large maritime organization and tried never to tell his exploits to strangers. After his death, close friends of a personnel security officer who told these stories from Aron Moiseevich himself told about his life.
