During the Second World War, Christopher Hadley Martin, a junior officer of the convoy fleet of British Navy, was pushed to a rock in the ocean by the waves after the warship was torpedoed. He struggled alone in the harsh environment to survive. However, he finally died. However, the author didn't reveal the truth to reader by an unexpected method until the end of the story: in fact, the process that Martin was tortured on the rock is only numerous hardships that an evil soul experiences in purgatory. The author wants to take the opportunity to warn people that they will eventually fall into hell beyond redemption if they cling to their own greed and evil; however, only by destroying the human nature of greed can souls eventually be rescued through the baptism of the purgatory.
