Zhi Ning Chen received his BEng, MEng, and PhD degrees all in Electrical Engineering from the Institute of Communications Engineering (ICE), China and his second PhD degree from University of Tsukuba, Japan, respectively. During 1988-1999, Dr Chen worked at ICE, Southeast University, City University of Hong Kong, China, and University of Tsukuba, Japan as a Faculty and Researcher. In 2004, he worked at IBM Watson Research Center, USA as an Academic Visitor. During 1999-2012, he worked with the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) as Principal Scientist and Department Head. In June 2012, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore as a Full Professor and concurrently an Advisor at I2R as well as Visiting/Adjunct/Guest Professor positions at Southeast University, Nanjing University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tsinghua University, Tongji University, University of Science and Technology, China, Dalian Maritime University, Chiba University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology as well as City University of Hong Kong. Dr. Chen was the founding General Chairs of International Workshop on Antenna Technology (iWAT), International Symposium on InfoComm & Media Technology in Bio-Medical & Healthcare Applications (IS 3T-in-3A), International Microwave Forum (IMWF) as well as Asia-Pacific Conference on Antennas and Propagation (APCAP). Dr. Chen's current research interest includes electromagnetic engineering as well as antennas for communication, radar, imaging, and sensing systems. He has published more than 400 technical papers and authored/edited the four books entitled Broadband Planar Antennas, UWB Wireless Communication, Antennas for Portable Devices, and Antennas for Base Stations in Wireless Communications. He also contributed chapters to the books entitled UWB Antennas and Propagation for Communications, Radar, and Imaging, Antenna Engineering Handbook as well as Microstrip and Printed Antennas. He is holding 32 granted and filed patents with 33 licensed deals with industry. He is the recipient of several international and local Best Paper Award and Engineering Achievement Award. Dr. Chen is a Fellow of the IEEE for contribution to small and broadband antennas for wireless applications. He is serving IEEE Trans Antennas and Propagation as an Associate Editor and served IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society as a Distinguished Lecturer during 2009-2011.
Theory describes the fundamentals including the concepts and definitions of antennas, the basic electromagnetic field theory related to radiation and scattering, modeling and optimization methods, EM wave propagation, as well as new key scientific and engineering findings such as meta-materials, electrically small antenna limitation and so on. Design covers both the classic and the state-of the-art antenna designs with design methodologies and analysis of typical design examples. The measurement methods and setups as well as the topics associated to antennas such as transmission systems and feeding structures are also included. Applications: mainly highlights the latest the applications of antennas in all wireless systems ranging from communication, radar, imaging, and sensing systems for life styles including personal communications, entertainments, biology, healthcare, medicine, education, and so on, as well as defence and industry transportation, power grid, energy, broadcasting, space, maritime applications.
