The extraordinary story of a Palestinian doctor who, despite witnessing the death of three of his daughters in the Israeli incursion into Gaza in January 2009, continued his medical and humanitarian work, with the aim of bringing the people of the region together in peace. Heart-breaking, hopeful and horrifying, Lan Akrah (I Shall Not Hate) is an inspiring account of Dr Izzeldin Abulaish's extraordinary life, growing up in poverty but determined to treat his patients in Gaza and Israel regardless of their ethnic origin.

I'm convinced that the majority of Israelis and Palestinians would rather look to the future than be trapped in the past. We see that spirit in [Izzeldin Abuelaish] Barack Obama, keynote speech on the Middle East, 19 May 2011 'In this book, Doctor Abuelaish has expressed a remarkable commitment to forgiveness and reconciliation that describes the foundation for a permanent peace in the Holy Land' Jimmy Carter, Former US President 'A journey of exceptional humanity, written with compassion, commitment and humility, set against unimaginable odds, it consumes you at every step' Michael Mansfield QC, UK 'It takes courage to refuse to hate, to refrain from advocating revenge. This book makes us meditate on the ferocity of the world, but equally it lets us glimpse what is most precious in humanity: the trembling flame of hope' Amin Maalouf 'This story is a necessary lesson against hatred and revenge' Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate ... a moving and powerful book ... The Guardian, UK
