"Kindness" ?

Fragments of memories free in time, people, places , feelings,
like mosaic bits creating an image that only can be understood
when completed.

I liked and admired her writing skills, backwards, forwards, the
mixed events, but I disliked the story, the big picture made of
lies, deceit, pain and grief.

The Witch of Napoli

Marvelous

Wery well written, with a hint of irony, human, sincere, an undefined sadness
about a reality denied but wanted. a morbid curiosity and the fear of the unknown
that can reveals itself in extraordinary events.

Recommended to those interested in parapsychology and mediums.

Second Life

A desappoitment

Expectations were high after his first book, the very good "Before I go to sleep "
but, unfortunately "Second Life" is a bad taste semi-thriller.

I found difficult to like Julia -the main character- with her loyalties and desloyalties,
the ludricrous dialogues with her "friend" Anna, the misguided psychology of the story.
Just the enigmatic end is sort of interesting .......

The Darkest Hour

Romantic

Barbara Erskine writes beautiful books, normaly with historical background
mixed with her love of the supernatural.

This one is a sentimental wartime story intercepted with today's reality and
reasearch to find out the truth about the past ( and with the help of a ghost or two)...........
I always enjoy her books.

The Girl on the Train

Very interesting

A great psychological thriller. A murder, but no nice intelligent dectetive to analyse the facts and talk
to the suspects. No Here are the people envolved, the suspects, who talk, tell their own story.Lonely,
hurt,troubled minds. The book is full of suspense.

To guess the murderer is not the point, the important is the description and the very intelligent analysis
of the persons.Their life their minds their feelings. It is unsettling, gloomy, absorving.

Not her best

Cyprus 74, the conflict between greek and turkish forces.
A sad story as war stories are. But a deception. The book is slow, so slow, monotonous, repetitive
with no sting nor intensity.

The Children Act

Touching, beautiful.

She is a known judge, immerse in her work,compassionate and rational,but with a troubled
private life. Then there is the case of a teenager boy whose deep religious beliefs denies him
the right to have a blood transfusion.
She takes the case and gives the veredict........Then, the consequences.........

Very well analysed, strong and intelligent,so very Ian McEwan !!

The Night Falling

Deep and dramatic

Immensely well written ( as all her books are ) this one takes place in Italy, Puglia,during the
Summer of 1921, after the war. The poverty is appalling and there are violent clashes between
the guards working for the landowners and the peasants, who have nothing but their hate and
their pride as weapons.
Passion as hot as the scorching sun, hidden secrets, lies, love, hate and , above all, the
strength of revenge, the need of it.

A Classic

The descriptions and the atmosphere of the various tales are amazing. They focus on the
supernatural, ancientes mythes, malign forces , macabre beeings.
Hidden caves, dungeons, deep empty graves in old cemiteries, all kinds of horror imaginable
or not imaginable. Fantastic tales of cosmic dangers, evil unseen in the dark...
