Your book Big Little Lies became a huge success, how did you come up with the original idea of the book?  
I came up with the premise when I was on a book tour with another author who was spending every spare moment searching for the perfect necklace to wear to a school trivia night. She and her friends were all planning to dress up as Audrey Hepburn. For some reason the image of those mothers with their Audrey Hepburn hairstyles and outfits stayed with me long after the tour. I thought imagine if all the mothers were dressed as Audrey Hepburn and the fathers dressed as Elvis Presley? Then I thought, imagine if there was some sort of argument between all those Elvises and Audreys? Then I thought, why not a riot? After that I was hooked. Although I hadn’t attended a school trivia night, I had recently become a ‘school mum’ for the first time. I came late to motherhood so I tend to look at the world of parenting with the wide eyes of a tourist. It’s that ordinary yet extraordinary world of parenting I wanted to explore.

How did it feel to watch your story come alive on the screen?  
It was thrillingl! I was lucky enough to visit the set in LA when they were filming the school trivia night. It was a surreal experience and a great thrill to meet the cast and also to chat with people like the producers, the set designers, the stuntmen, make-up artists and so on. Because they were filming the night scenes, everyone was working right through the night. I must admit that I eventually got tired and left them to it!    

What’s your most memorable reading experience?   
It’s very hard to choose just one, but I guess I will choose Life after Life by Kate Atkinson. I had such a sense of movement when I was reading this book, it was as though the author was spinning me round and round leaving me laughing, dizzy, breathless and exhilarated.
