Recension av Jonas Ludvigsson
stark skildring av Spanien under Franco-tiden
5 november 2017
I think this is a great book but you need time to read it, and need to focus to keep track of all personalities¿.
In short the plot is about the Franco era and socialists trying to resist the fascists. Several of the socialists end up in jail or prison camp and in the midst of everything is Manolita, her relatives, her brother and her husband. I was extremely upset reading about the poor situation of her sister Isa (in a cloister). In the aftertext of the (Swedish) book, Grandes' describes a number of people who inspired her of her book and the "true Isa" being one of them.
The book by Grandes reminded me of Merce Rodoreda's "The diamond square" which I plan to re-read in the net few weeks (I have an old copy from "en bok för alla" that I bought in 1993. I guess this latter book is more relevant now than ever considering what is going on in Catalonia at the moment.
