The title - On: Architecture - comes out of Tham & Videgård s desire to think and talk about the fundamentals of architecture. The book shares this conversation with the reader and shows, through seventy-three project examples, how their ideas have been tested in practice. "Architecture concerns us all. It is the most comprehensive and complex art form in society. In our work, it emerges from an ongoing discussion about architecture and a desire to explore what architecture can be" says Bolle Tham & Martin Videgård. Bokens titel - On: Architecture - utgår ifrån Tham & Videgårds önskan att föra ett samtal om arkitekturens fundamentala aspekter. Boken delar detta samtal med läsaren och visar, hur deras idéer har omsatts i sjuttiotre projektexempel. "Arkitektur angår oss alla. Det är samhällets mest heltäckande och komplexa konstform. Material can be symbolic and coded. Our experience of a medium's temporality becomes apparent only through our knowledge of its material behaviour. As the world becomes ever more digital and physically removed, we rely on a lot of materials (technical equipment, tools and infrastructures) to facilitate the remote accessibility of images. And yet, as we become more physically removed, our fascination with 'real' stuff increases. The texts in Material Matters represent a great diversity of practices and materials, but also the diversity of meanings suggested by the book's title. They address the materials needed for the implementation of tasks, the material out of which things are made, the material for or subject matter of scholarly work, and matter itself: the raw materials of our surroundings. The texts in the publication derive from presentations given at the conference Material Matters, held at the Royal Institute of Art on December 13-14, 2018. Ingemar Lööf föddes i ett enkelt arbetarhem i Kristinehamn 1929. Fadern som var murare hade gärna sett att Ingemar fortsatt i samma spår som han själv, men Ingemar hade andra planer. Att i 1940-talets Sverige, långt bort från akademier och lärosäten bestämma sig som 19-åring att bli konstnär måste ha varit ett stort beslut, även att bryta upp från familj, ansvar och förväntningar. Att resa till Stockholm och komma in på Akademien, en bedrift bara det. Innan han begav sig till Stockholm och började studera på Otte Skölds målarskola och på Kungliga Konstakademien hade han lärt sig faderns yrke från grunden och i detalj. Hantverksskicklighet är något som genomsyrar hela Lööfs konstnärskap och som tar sig uttryck i en precision med ett fåtal motiv som Lööf ständigt återvänder till. Genom att måla samma bild gång på gång utforskar han alla möjligheter i motivet och utvecklar sina bilder likt en vetenskap där experiment på experiment till sist leder fram till den optimala balansen och den absoluta bilden.

I början av 1960-talet skapade Ulla Wiggen en svit målningar föreställande elektroniska komponenter och datorer. Hon utforskade denna motivvärld då knappast någon kunde förutse hur den digitala teknologin skulle revolutionera våra dagliga liv. Kort därefter, 1966 deltog hon i föreställningarna 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering i New York då hon assisterade Öyvind Fahlström, vars radikala konstsyn varit av stor betydelse för henne. 1969 började hon måla människor och gjorde därefter också en serie porträtt. Hon utbildade sig även till legitimerad psykoterapeut som sedan blev hennes huvudsakliga yrke fram till 2013 då hon hade en utställning på Moderna Museet i Stockholm. Sedan dess har hennes fokus på datorernas inre och människans yttre flyttats till insidan av människokroppen och alltmer kommit att inriktas mot hjärnan och ögats iris.

In the early 1960s Ulla Wiggen created a suite of paintings depicting electronic components and computers. She explored this world when hardly anyone could predict how digital technology would revolutionize our daily lives. Shortly afterwards, in 1966, she participated in the performances 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering in New York assisting Öyvind Fahlström, whose radical view of art was of great importance to her. In 1969 she started painting humans and then made a series of portraits. She also became a licensed psychotherapist, which became her primary vocation until 2013 when she had an exhibtion at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Since then, her focus on the computer's interior and the human exterior has shifted to the inside of the human body and increasingly focused on the brain and iris of the eye.

In Sophie Tottie s recent work re-workings of previous work, text material and leftover products like paint and brush cleaner are incorporated and reused in new work. Tottie s works function as prisms that weigh, measure, and materialize something that seems to belong to an inner, intangible reality but which manifests itself in an outer material and physical existence.   The work in AiWHEtL circles around the act of learning, where one main question is not what it is about but how it works. The book includes four texts that discuss Tottie's work from the 1990s up to the present a work that is not a conglomeration of facts and an end point, but which remodels through actions, ongoing contemplation and re-evaluations of what has been said and done.

I Sophie Totties senaste arbeten används omarbetningar av tidigare arbeten, textmaterial och restprodukter som penseltvätt i nya arbeten. Totties konst fungerar som ett slags prismor som väger in, mäter och materialiserar det som kan tyckas tillhöra en inre, opåtaglig verklighet med en yttre materiell och fysisk tillvaro. AiWHEtL utgår från ett lärande där frågan inte är vad något handlar om utan hur det fungerar. Boken innehåller fyra texter som diskuterar Totties arbete från 90-talet till idag ett arbete som inte är ett konglomerat av fakta och en slutpunkt utan något som omdanar i handlingar, pågående betraktande och omprövande av det som gjorts och sagts.

How do you remember its architecture, furniture, objects, light, and sound, its atmosphere? What interests me is how images from films, memories and your immediate surroundings coincide in layers. Kristina Janssons målningar och verk omfattar ofta en arbetsprocess som hämtar inspiration från aktuella och historiska händelser, med referenser från olika medier och populärkultur. Jansson undersöker också olika typer av rum: privata, offentliga och tillfälliga fiktiva arkitektoniska rum så som teaterscenen, filminspelningen, musikstudion och museet. Janssons måleri är på samma gång sökande och undflyende och hon har konsekvent återkommit till frågan om betydelsen av måleriet som medium i vår tid. Genom att bearbeta fragment av vår kollektiva bildbank via intuition, perception och minne använder hon måleriet som en visuellt förförisk konstruktion. En transformerad plats frånkopplad tid och rum.

Kristina Jansson s paintings involves a work process that draws inspiration from current and historical events, with references from various media and popular culture. Furthermore, Jansson investigates different types of spaces: private, public and temporary fictional architectural spaces such as the theater stage, the film set, the music studio and the museum. Jansson s work is at the same time seeking and evasive, and she has consistently returned to the question of the importance of painting as a medium in our time. Through processing fragments from our collective stream of images via intuition, perception, and memory she uses painting as a visually seductive construction. A transformed place disconnected from time and space.

Early Reading is based on a non-linear documentation of social structures and their different approaches to trust and fear. The book has a fragmentary structure and relates to Hoogland Ivanow's film Interbeing (2018). The material is presented through a thermal camera, whose optics do not register what is visible to the eye but render shades of temperature - a perspective granting all living beings the same conditions of representation. The camera also makes a heat shadow visible both upon and after physical touch. The heat remains, as a trace of utmost commonality left after direct contact, and after public, everyday chance encounters.

Perifert seende är förmågan att se saker utanför din direkta synlinje. Att lägga märke till och uppmärksamma det som inte nödvändigtvis är mest uppenbart är en gåva som fotograferna i den här boken delar. De speglar olika syn på och förhållningssätt till ett föränderligt Sverige och visar ett urval av samtida fotografi som pendlar mellan det dokumentära och det poetiska. Denna bok sammanför tjugo svenska fotografer, varav de flesta har etablerats under det senaste decenniet. Peripheral vision is the ability to see things outside of your direct line of sight. To notice and pay attention to what isn t necessarily most obvious is a gift that the photographers in this book share. They represent different views and approaches to a changing Sweden and shows a selection of contemporary photography that oscillates between the documentary and the poetic. This book collects twenty Swedish photographic practices, most of which have emerged during the last decade. It is produced by The Center for Photography (CFF-Centrum för fotografi) in Sweden, with the ambition of deepening knowledge about Swedish photography and helping it to reach a wider audience in Sweden and abroad.
