Word-of-Mouth in Contemporary Hollywood provides a unique insight into the potential for online communication to enable audiences to exert a greater impact on film industrial practices than ever before. In an overarching analysis of contemporary Hollywood film financing, marketing, distribution, and exhibition practices, Simon Hewitt recontextualises word-of-mouth in light of social media and examines the growing impact of audience participation.Using a ‘Bourdieuconomic’ approach, he applies qualitative research methods to better understand the contemporary Hollywood film audience, the contemporary Hollywood film industry, and the mechanisms that connect the two. The book explores new film financing mechanisms that incorporate fans into the packages used to secure production funds. It assesses the role of ‘Grassroots Intermediaries’ in contemporary film marketing campaigns. It critiques ‘democratic’ crowdsourced methods of film distribution, and finally, it considers the possible future of Hollywood film exhibition.By helping to bridge the gap between the gift economy and commodity culture, this book will appeal to students and scholars of media industry studies, media finance and economics, fan and audience studies, film studies, film history, and media marketing.

Retail pricing strategy is seen as one of the priorities in retail management. There exist two main pricing strategies in retailing: the Every Day Low Price (EDLP) strategy and the High-Low (Hi-Lo) pricing strategy. Despite the importance of this topic, it has been given little attention in academic research. The author fills this gap in academic literature and examines the topic both from a theoretical and an empirical perspective. Based on a comprehensive conceptual examination of pricing strategies in retailing, the author conducted two large-scale empirical studies about the impact of the retailer’s pricing strategy and the price promotion activity on store performance and derives fruitful implications both for future research and for managerial action.

The Evolution of Chinese Popular Cinema provides insights into the Chinese film industry and popular cinema in the past two decades (with a major focus on the films produced since the mid-2010s).The book emphasizes on the film market in mainland China since the mid- 2010s and how it has been dramatically different from the previous decades, featuring big names like Zhang Yimou and Feng Xiaogang. Witnessing an age of baokuan films – films that have renewed box office records, represented by Wolf Warrior 2, The Wandering Earth, Nezha, and Hi, Mom – this study contends that baokuan films have forged a unique category in the landscape of Chinese cinema. It further reveals how these commercially successful films interact with industrial, economic, political, and social elements, illuminating transformations in Chinese filmmaking amid the country’s evolving landscape since the 2010s through the post-pandemic era.It will be an insightful resource for undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and general audiences interested in Asian Studies, Film Studies, Chinese media and cultural studies, contemporary Chinese cinema and cultural industries, and Chinese cinema studies. The book will also inspire researchers in China Studies by discussing the instability of globalization and China’s changing global strategies, state and popular nationalism, and the rise of active audiences through the lens of popular films.
