Jointly hosted by the Ergonomics Society of South Africa (ESSA) and the International Ergonomics Association (IEA), this conference was attended by over 300 delegates and represented the largest and most prestigious gathering of eminent international ergonomists in the history of Africa. It also marked the beginning of a revival in concern for the well-being and productivity of people at work in South Africa.

The conference aimed to juxtapose two great ergonomic themes - the under-developed ethos of the affluent societies and the technologically advanced ethos of the most affluent societies. The structure of the proceedings reflects this with the first section addressing the priorities of countries in transition and the last section addressing the priorities of the most industrially-developed countries, who have, by and large, long since solved the sorts of ergonomics problems currently of concern in the under-developed world. In between these, in a roughly hierarchical arrangement from micro- to macro- levels of analysis, are sections which collectively help span the whole field of ergonomics. Section overviews are provided to outline the topics included in each section.

In the next millennium, it is anticipated that human factors issues will take centre stage in initiatives targeted at enhancing economic competitiveness and productivity. Rumination syndrome (RS) is a condition characterized by repeated, effortless regurgitation of material (usually food). RS is classified as both a disorder of gut-brain interaction, and as a feeding and eating disorder. Not only can the experience of RS be distressing, it can severely impact a patient's medical functioning and ability to live a full life. RS is unfortunately an overlooked (and thus under-treated) condition, as individuals with RS may often describe their symptoms as “reflux” or “vomiting.” RS can also co-occur with other gastrointestinal and eating disorders, further complicating the clinical picture. The good news is that RS can be successfully treated. This book offers a comprehensive treatment approach for RS, for use with children, adolescents, and adults. With evidence backing its use, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for RS (CBT-RS), is designed for clinicians (behavioral health or medical) to use with patients in their own clinical settings. With case examples and a practical stepwise approach, clinicians are able to take CBT-RS into their own clinical settings to increase treatment access for RS.

Graeme Segal takes the Kortewegde Vries and nonlinear Schrödinger equations as central examples, and explores the mathematical structures underlying the inverse scattering transform. The International Symposium on Generalized Functions and Their Applications was organized by the Department of Mathematics, Banaras Hindu University, and held December 23-26, 1991, on the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee Celebration of the university. More than a hundred mathematicians from ten countries participated in the deliberations of the symposium. Thirty lectures were delivered on a variety of topics within the area. The contributions to the proceedings of the symposium are, with a few exceptions, expanded versions of the lectures delivered by the invited speakers. The survey papers by Komatsu and Hoskins and Sousa Pinto provide an up-to-date account of the theory of hyperfunctions, ultradistributions and microfunctions, and the nonstandard theory of new generalized functions, respectively; those by Stankovic and Kanwal deal with structures and asymptotics. Choquet-Bruhat's work studies generalized functions on manifold and gives applications to shocks and discrete models. The other contributions relate to contemporary problems and achievements in theory and applications, especially in the theory of partial differential equations, differential geometry, mechanics, mathematical physics, and systems science.
