Efter att ha skrivit en avhandling om Fjodor Dostojevskij kom hon i mitten av 1950-talet till England som Fulbrightstipendiat. Debutboken The Colossus utkom 1960, men det var med den postuma utgåvan av Ariel 1965 som hennes rykte verkligen började växa. Under hela livet led Plath av svåra depressioner. Hon begick självmord 1963.
