Mitt under den svenska designens mest glansfyllda segertåg över världen började det pyra under den välpolerade ytan. Med beteckningen den fria formen ringar Cilla Robach in en relativt okänd företeelse i 1960-talets svenska formhistoria. Det handlar om föremål som bröt mot estetiska normer, mot hantverkstraditioner och mot krav på tingens brukbarhet. Härigenom tvingade formgivarna fram en diskussion om gränsen mellan konst och konsthantverk. Den fria formen var startpunkten för den gränsupplösning mellan konstvärlden och formvärlden, som har etablerats under 2000-talets första decennium, och som Robach diskuterade i utställningen Konceptdesign på Nationalmuseum 2005. Cilla Robach, född 1969, är formhistoriker och sedan 1998 verksam som intendent vid Nationalmuseum. Formens frigörelse är hennes doktorsavhandling.
