Kan gamla tanter springa? Kan humlor flyga? Behöver vi egentligen veta om det går eller hur det kan gå till? Det enklaste är väl ändå att bara prova tänkte jag och började leta lite tips på nätet. Det fanns inte så mycket info för 57-åriga tanter, men desto fler för tjejer och killar i 30 - 35-årsåldern som börjat springa ”på gamla dar” och ville bli snabbare på milen. Jag insåg rätt snabbt att jag måste skapa mitt eget upplägg. Lyssna mer på mig själv och min kropp och strunta i andras febrila jakt på miltider. Det är ju uppenbart att humlor faktiskt kan flyga trots de små vingarna och den klumpiga kroppen. Och jag har bevisat för mig själv att en tant som jag kan springa, trots stela ben och långsamma muskler. Humlorna har inte inväntat vetenskapliga förklaringar, de har flugit ändå. Precis så har jag också försökt göra. Efter mina egna förutsättningar. Jag bor på en ö i skärgården. Här finns inga gym eller joggargrupper. Inga personliga tränare heller. Bara en grusväg och några skogsstigar. Och min egen vilja att komma i lite bättre form. Den här lilla boken är ett försök att dela med mig av mina erfarenheter, tankar och reflektioner.

När Tomas Brunegård som 33-åring blev vd på Göteborgs-Posten påbörjade han en händelserik resa. Under sina sjutton år som chef på G-P och Stampenkoncernen genomdrev han stora förändringar. Voters on the Move or on the Run? addresses electoral change, the reasons, and the consequences. By investigating heterogeneity of voting, and complexity of voting and its context the volume shows that increasing heterogeneity is not arbitrary and unstructured. Heterogeneity of voting rather is a way of voters dealing with the increasing complexity of the context of elections - diversified social structures, increasing differentiation of political supply,increasing complexity of the information environment. By analysing the conditions of heterogeneity and showing that the calculus of voting becomes more and more conditional in terms of what voters regard as relevant criteria for vote choice, the book demonstrates that the new feature of electoral behaviour isstructured heterogeneity. The dimensions of differentiation of the electorate are cognitive capacity and the structure of individual information acquisition systems. The book demonstrates that voters are on the move looking for appropriate answers to new complexities rather than on the run. The book uses data predominantly from the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES), and also comparative data from the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES). Cross-sectional analysis is complementedby long- and short-term dynamic analyses with panel data, and comparative analyses.

Electoral decision-making has become much more volatile, rendering election outcomes less predictable. Party system fragmentation intensified sharply. The success of the AfD put an end to Germany''s exceptionality as one of the few European countries without a strong right-wing populist party. Utilizing a wide range of data compiled by the German Longitudinal Election Study, the book examines changing voters'' behavior in the context of changing parties, campaigns, and media during the period of its hitherto most dramatically increased fluidity at the 2009, 2013, and 2017 federal elections. Guided by the notions of realignment and dealignment the study addresses three questions: How did the turbulences that increasingly characterize German electoral politics come about? How did they in turn condition voters'' decision-making? How were voters'' attitudes and choices affected by situational factors that pertained to the specifics of particular elections? The Changing German Voter demonstrates how traditional cleavages lost their grip on voters and a new socio-cultural line of conflict became the dominant axis of party competition. A series of major crises, but also programmatic shifts of the established parties promoted this development. It led to a segmentation of the party system that pits the right-wing populist AfD against the traditional parties. The book also demonstrates the relevance of coalition preferences, candidate images as well as media and campaign effects for voters'' attitudes, beliefs, and preferences.

The 2013 federal election in Germany took place amidst considerable uncertainty over the EU’s economic crisis. Financial rescue packages for several countries required the provision of huge sums. Some EU-members barely avoided the economic abyss. Germany, however, was spared much of the hardship as her economy produced record-levels of employment, exports boomed, and German state coffers began to see a budget surplus. Against this backdrop, this book examines the choices offered to voters by parties, and publics’ decision calculus. How did Germany’s voter evaluate economic conditions and the Euro crisis? For example, is there a demand for a new party representing the rising EU-skeptical sentiments? How did long-term developments such as the weakening party-voter ties affect the election outcome? Southern Europe has been the EU region most exposed to the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis with consequences for national party systems and political stability. The 2014 European Parliament elections took place at a crucial time for Europe and Southern European societies more generally. This book analyses the Euroelections in Southern Europe, asking whether these followed the usual pattern of low-stimulus contests or whether the crisis context raised the bar. Country chapters on Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Malta investigate the background of the elections, the electoral campaign and the rise of Euroscepticism. The linkage between governments’ economic performance, the Europhile or Eurosceptic stances of political parties, and their electoral performance are at the core of the analysis in each chapter. The findings reveal that the political and electoral consequences of the economic crisis have not fundamentally challenged the second-order character of the 2014 European Parliament elections in Southern Europe. However, electoral behaviour exhibits some indications of a more critical contest in which the EU divide becomes more significant and polarising in determining voting choices. The 2013 federal election in Germany took place amidst considerable uncertainty over the EU’s economic crisis. Financial rescue packages for several countries required the provision of huge sums. Some EU-members barely avoided the economic abyss. Germany, however, was spared much of the hardship as her economy produced record-levels of employment, exports boomed, and German state coffers began to see a budget surplus. Against this backdrop, this book examines the choices offered to voters by parties, and publics’ decision calculus. How did Germany’s voter evaluate economic conditions and the Euro crisis? For example, is there a demand for a new party representing the rising EU-skeptical sentiments? How did long-term developments such as the weakening party-voter ties affect the election outcome?
