Antiquity’s original travel guide.Pausanias, born probably in Lydia in Asia Minor, was a Greek of the second century AD, about 120–180, who traveled widely not only in Asia Minor, Palestine, Egypt, and North Africa, but also in Greece and in Italy, including Rome. He left a description of Greece in ten books, which is like a topographical guidebook or tour of Attica, the Peloponnese, and central Greece, filled out with historical accounts and events and digressions on facts and wonders of nature. His chief interest was in monuments of art and architecture, especially the most famous of them; the accuracy of his descriptions is proved by surviving remains.The Loeb Classical Library edition of Pausanias is in five volumes; the fifth volume contains maps, plans, illustrations, and a general index.

Economic plants have been defined by SEPASAT as those plants that are utilised either directly or indirectly for the benefit of Man. Indirect usage includes the needs of Man's livestock and the maintenance of the environment; the benefits may be domestic, commercial or aesthetic. Economic plants constitute a large and so far uncalculated percentage of the quarter of a million higher plants in the World today. However, it has been calculated that 10% (25 000) of these species are now on the verge of extinction and extinction means that a genetic resource that could be of benefit to Man will be lost for ever. Furthermore, for every species lost an estimated 10-30 other dependent organisms are also doomed. Fewer than 1 per cent of the World's plants have been sufficiently well studied for a true evaluation of the potential floral wealth awaiting discovery, not only in the rain forests, which man is now actively destroying at a rate of 20 ha a minute, but also in the very much neglected dry areas of the World.

Excited states and free radicals are involved in the normal physiology of living systems; in pathological processes including lipid peoxidation, inflammation, Parkinson's disease, cancer, and ageing; in the mechanism of action of drugs, such as quinone antitumour agents, and in the photochemotherapies such as the PUVA therapy of skin diseases and PDT of cancer. The chief aim of this text is to introduce the reader to this rapidly expanding field, which lies at the borderlines of physics, chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and medicine, and, in particular, to explore how time-resolved spectroscopic methods have found solutions at the molecular level to biological and medical problems. In the first three chapters, the nature of excited states and free radicals, and the fast kinetic and spectroscopic techniques for their study are described. Amongst the biological areas described in the subsequent chapters are: activated oxygen species; DNA; proteins; carotenoids and photosynthetic reaction centres; photodermatology and melanogenesis; and aspects of cancer related to radio-, chemo-, and photodynamic therapy.

This is the seventh volume of the Lexicon of Greek Personal Names to be published, a work which offers comprehensive documentation of named individuals in the Greek-speaking world in the period from c. 700 BC to 600 AD, drawn from all sources (predominantly written in Greek and to a lesser extent in Latin). It is the second of three volumes that comprise the personal names attested in Asia Minor. This particular volume is concerned with its southern coast, incorporating the ancient regions of Caria, Lycia, Pamphylia, and Cilicia, and thus completes coverage of the coastal regions. The volume documents more than 44,500 individuals who between them bore in excess of 8,400 different names. In contrast to those parts of Asia Minor facing the Aegean, Propontis, and Black Sea, there was little Greek settlement along the southern coast. So, in this volume particular interest attaches to the very large number of non-Greek names originating in the languages of the indigenous peoples of these regions - Carian, Lycian, Sidetic, and Pisidian - all of them descended from the Hittite-Luwian languages spoken in Anatolia in the second and early first millennia BC. The volume provides the raw material that allows us to see how indigenous names gave way first to Greek and later to Latin names, and how the pace of these changes varies from one region to another as one aspect of those processes of acculturation labelled as 'hellenization' and 'Romanization'. It contains a detailed introduction which addresses the definition of each of the regions and their cultural identity in terms both of geography and language and onomastics. It also guides the user through some of the problems of topography, dialect, and the treatment of non-Greek names, as well as providing some detailed statistics that point to interesting regional patterns.

The five papers in this book describe those new developments from various viewpoints and are intended to be an introduction accessible to readers from a range of backgrounds.The book arises out of the second Seminaire European de Statistique (SEMSTAT) held in Oxford in December 1994. This brought together young statisticians from across Europe, and a series of introductory lectures were given on topics at the forefront of current research activity. The lectures form the basis for the five papers contained in the book.The papers by Shephard and Johansen deal respectively with time series models for volatility, i.e. variance heterogeneity, and with cointegration. Clements and Hendry analyze the nature of prediction errors. A complementary review paper by Laird gives a biometrical view of the analysis of short time series. Finally Astrup and Nielsen give a mathematical introduction to the study of option pricing. Whilst the book draws its primary motivation from financial series and from multivariate econometric modelling, the applications are potentially much broader.
