Craig S. Keener (PhD, Duke University) is professor of New Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. He is the author of many books, including the bestseller The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament, The Historical Jesus of the Gospels, Gift and Giver, a four-volume commentary on Acts, and commentaries on Matthew, John, Romans, 1-2 Corinthians, and Revelation.

    Keeners verk är utan tvekan en av århundradets mest detaljerade och gedigna böcker om mirakler. Med utgångspunkt från Jesu mirakler i evangelierna, som Keener som nytestamentlig exeget ständigt mött ifrågasättande av, ägnar författaren över 1000 sidor åt att diskutera miraklers trovärdighet, deras roll i religionshistorien samt mirakelberättelser från vår tid. Filosofi, historia och journalistik blandas i en oerhört detaljerad kompott med tusentals mirakelberättelser från när och fjärran.

    Författaren har två teser: för det första att berättelser, eller vittnesbörd, om mirakler förekommer i minst lika stor utsträckning som på Jesu tid. Detta för att argumentera emot ateisten David Humes kända argument mot mirakler som bland annat går ut på att knappt någon erfar mirakler längre. Den andra tesen är att det är resonabelt för människor att tro på mirakler som historiska fenomen utifrån de vittnesbörd vi har att tillgå idag.

    Jag har fått stor behållning av Keeners tvåbandsbok och använder den dels som referens i mina kyrkohistoriska och teologiska arbeten, dels som kvällsläsning när jag känner mig sugen på en mirakeldos. Detta är ett verk jag verkligen varmt rekommenderar.
