Mass production is tending to re-define the lines between supposedly inert and passive material things and human beings, considered the only subjects endowed with agency. Even images are far from being impermeable to this and spread presently beyond the two-dimensional space, becoming objects in themselves. MOMENTA Montréal thus explores the universes built between individuals and their material environment, highlighting the reciprocal relations between subject and object. Artists: Laura Aguilar, Francis Alÿs, Kader Attia, Elisabeth Belliveau, Karen Paulina Biswell, Maeve Brennan, Jonathas de Andrade, Raphaëlle de Groot, Hannah Doerksen, Patricia Domínguez, Chun Hua Catherine Dong, Alinka Echeverría, Peter Fischli / David Weiss, Jeneen Frei Njootli, Marina Gadonneix, Gauri Gill, Maggie Groat, Felicity Hammond, Jérôme Havre, Laura Huertas Millán, Keyezua, Kapwani Kiwanga, Anouk Kruithof, Maryse Larivière, Taus Makhacheva, Ana Mendieta, Izumi Miyazaki, Bridget Moser, Meagan Musseau, Rafael Ortega, Juan Ortiz-Apuy, Celia Perrin Sidarous, Miguel Angel Ríos, Jamie Ross, Victoria Sin, Cauleen Smith, Batia Suter, Camille Turner.Londoño Kapwani Kiwanga and Maryse Larivière have each conceived of a series of artworks exclusive to this publication.

In a world saturated with images, some, strangely, are lacking. The 19th edition of MOMENTA aims to open up multiple perspectives for experimentation and speculation on the nature, uses, and production of missing images. In Praise of the Missing Image explores both contemporary challenges in relation to the image and the current consequences of the complex dynamics involved in constructing narratives. Which stories are told, how, and by whom? This publication presents the 22 exhibitions in the Biennale, as well as an exclusive series of graphic scores by the artist Lou Sheppard. In their original essays, the guest authors enrich and broaden the reflections inherent to the themes of the curator, Marie-Ann Yemsi: Françoise Vergès wonders how to make the narratives of “missing images” heard in the image, and Yaniya Lee suggests that we move away from representation and, instead, embrace alternative methodologies for liberation.Artists: Iván Argote, Raphaël Barontini, Raven Chacon, Omar Victor Diop + Lee Shulman, Gabrielle Goliath, Maureen Gruben, Anique Jordan, Joyce Joumaa, Martin Akwiranoron Loft, Caroline Mauxion, Na Mira, Mallory Lowe Mpoka, Niap, Josèfa Ntjam, Myriam Omar Awadi, Frida Orupabo, OK Pedersen, Paul Seesequasis, Lou Sheppard, Sanaz Sohrabi, Paula Valero Comín, Anouk Verviers.
