This book offers a systematic reconstruction of Paulin Hountondji’s contributions to the debate about the place of modern science on the African continent. The book shows that Hountondji develops an account of modern science that is sociologically sensitive to the entanglement between modern science and colonialism on the African continent without falling into epistemic relativism about the claims of modern science. It is argued that Hountondji’s views on modern science express a strong historical materialist influence, and that he develops a theory of science that draws both on the Hessen-Grossmann hypothesis and dependency theory. Thus, this book brings together two strands of historical materialist thought about science that have hitherto been isolated from one another. This book is of interest to scholars who specialize in African philosophy, history and philosophy of science, global philosophy, and African studies.

This book offers a new perspective on the emergence of concepts that shaped the world, set against the dramatic background of political upheaval and crisis of scientific knowledge that characterized interwar Germany and Austria. On the one hand, the political-theoretical certainties of previous generations were rendered suddenly obsolete by the imperatives of total war. On the other hand, the old certainties of a reductive and deterministic conception of scientific knowledge had likewise been destabilized, in this case by the revolutionary discoveries of Relativity Theory and Quantum Mechanics. Among the philosophically literate intelligentsia of interwar Germany and Austria, the juxtaposition of such radical epistemic and political insecurity created fertile ground for the cross-pollination of ideas across disciplines. Using a network-oriented approach, this book traces key lines of influence, following the development, dissemination, and reinterpretation of concepts from domains of political thought to epistemology and back again. It is of interest and importance to a broad range of readers interested in learning how the ideas of physicist-philosophers like Albert Einstein and Werner Heisenberg shaped the paradigms within which major theorists like Walter Benjamin and Carl Schmitt opened up new horizons for political thought.

This book is the first English translation of a German classic in the social-historical historiography of science in the early modern period. It presents a reconstruction of the ‘Scientific Revolution’ based on a critical historical materialism. It argues that the dominant ideas, images, and philosophies of nature of that time were conditioned by humans’ practical and technological relationship with nature, and that they changed in accordance with the historical development of early capitalist society. Against economic reductionism, Lefèvre stresses the interdependence of material conditions of life and theories of nature on the basis of a critical study of sources and historical contexts. The book makes available an important study with related texts and contributes to the current debates on the intersection of historical and political epistemology. The series editors provide a conceptual and contextual introduction, including information on the political-epistemological background of the book first published in 1978.
