Governing from above : solid waste management in Nigeria's new capital city of Abuja

This doctoral dissertation examines how the symbolic character of a relocated capital city influences and intersects with local conditions to shape the governance structure and relations in service delivery. The focus is on Abuja, the new capital city of Nigeria, and the sector studied is solid waste management. Abuja was planned to avoid the numerous problems facing other Nigerian cities. Contrary to the intention of government and planners, the city now houses the fastest growing slum in the country. There are various possible explanations for these outcomes but this study pays particular attention to the conception of Abuja as a symbol of national unity.

A place apart? : debating landscapes and identities in the Shetland Islands
Häftad, Engelska, 2015

This thesis explores a number of contemporary debates with a bearing on landscapes and identities in the Shetland Islands – an archipelago caught between the Atlantic and the North Sea – and which physical location often seems notoriously difficult to ‘pin down’ by outsiders. Meanwhile, islanders too may sometimes seem at a loss, not so much in terms of where they are as who they are, whether Scottish, or Scandinavian, or something that is neither of the two. Geographical and cultural location, belonging and tensions between local and national interests are discussed by the author in relation to several contested issues, ranging from landscape management and nature conservation to place branding and island stereotypes, with the overall purpose of investigating where people in this group of islands currently ‘are’ in relation to questions of landscape and identity. In this context, the thesis also highlights some aspects of the interconnectedness of these concepts from different theoretical perspectives as well as when expressed and enacted in the course of everyday life. The present study, which is distinctly place specific in character, is set against a backdrop of devolved power structures, nation building and the upcoming referendum on Scottish independence.

Proximity and learning in internationalisation : small Swedish IT firms in India
Häftad, Engelska, 2015

This thesis is about four small IT service firms with offices in Sweden and India. These four service firms set out to interact and collaborate between the offices, some more intensely and frequently than others. In the process of their internationalisation, they need to find ways, or to learn, how to collaborate in an international setting, including making use of physical as well as social proximity. In Proximity and Learning in Internationalisation - small Swedish IT firms in India, Westermark combines a discussion on proximities and processes of learning to present a more thorough understanding of how social proximity can develop over time, and furthermore, in what way social proximity matters for service firms working in an international setting. The qualitative exploration of the process of learning is inspired by 'communities of practice', and Westermark focuses on ways in which individuals at firms through social participation learn to collaborate across distance, and develop a common way of working together in an international setting. This thesis continues the vibrant discussion in economic geography on proximity as more than 'being there' in a physical sense. In this discussion, the understanding of proximity is as a metaphor of closeness, putting more emphasis on individuals and their experiences. In this thesis, experience of closeness is empirically explored through a longitudinal study. This includes trying to operationalise social proximity by exploring the experience of social proximity amongst the individuals at the case firms. More precisely, social proximity is conceptualised as individuals experiencing 'shared social familiarity'.
