In a more contentious world economy, where trade and finance are increasingly interlinked with economic security and geopolitical considerations, questions arise about the underpinnings of the US dollar's global leadership. For decades, the US dollar has reigned supreme, serving as a powerful tool of US foreign policy. However, history shows that currency dominance can shift with global power dynamics. Will China or another power rise to challenge the US-led system? Will the international monetary system experience a process of fragmentation, or will a new global order emerge? Will financial technology ease such a change? This book delves into the intricate web of how three forces – economic dislocation, evolving geopolitical relations and technology – could potentially foster transformations in the international monetary system. Adopting a multidisciplinary lens, it analyses the strategic elements that might compel major international powers to instigate change or solidify the current equilibrium. While there are no definitive answers on the future, the book provides readers with the key tools to understand the major factors influencing possible changes in the international finance system.

This book analyses how the European Union (EU) has dealt with crises and conflicts, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Iran’s nuclear dispute and Syria’s civil war, to understand the peculiar nature of its role in international security. Rather than focusing on the institutional set‑up of the EU’s foreign and security policy, the authors look at the ‘outer’ world, concentrating on crises and conflicts impinging on Europe’s security. They argue that the EU and its member states’ policies are constrained by systemic factors such as acute geopolitical rivalries and the fragmentation of regional governance systems, as well as by multi‑source internal contestation of policies across member states. Hence, building on pragmatist‑informed analysis they show that the EU’s actorness in international security is first and foremost constituted by interactions with its domestic and systemic context, and as such it should be understood as a ‘relational power’.This volume will be of great use to scholars and students of International Relations, European Studies, Security, Conflict and Peace Studies, and Diplomacy Studies seeking to deepen their understanding of the subject.

This book provides an in-depth analysis of the Russia-Ukraine war and its profound implications for European defence, examining the challenges faced by NATO and the EU. It delves into the historical origins, geopolitical context, and shifting dynamics of the conflict, tracing developments from the end of the Cold War to the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the full-scale invasion in 2022 - shedding light on the complexities of the war and its wide-ranging impact on European security. With expert contributors offering an Italian perspective, the book explores NATO's evolving strategies and policies in response to the crisis, including military, diplomatic, and informational dimensions, as well as its broader deterrence and defence posture. It also examines defence cooperation in Europe, particularly through European Union initiatives, and the multifaceted relationship between the war in Ukraine, the Atlantic Alliance, and the EU.The book assesses NATO's adaptation to the new security landscape, from military deployments in Eastern Europe to its deepening collaboration with the European Union, while addressing the alliance's role in countering emerging threats in domains such as space. Through a multidisciplinary lens, combining international relations history and political science, this study offers a distinctive and comprehensive exploration of international relations, security, and defence.

This book investigates the reasons behind the absence of consolidated protection concerning disaster displacement in the EU.It identifies three key reasons for this gap:1) The way disaster displacement—along with its causes, dynamics, and the nature of harm—is conceptualized at both EU and national levels.2) The interpretation and application of international protection statuses by asylum authorities and decision-makers, particularly in the context of disaster displacement.3) The restrictive asylum policies adopted by decision-makers, which prioritize deterrence and create significant barriers to accessing protection.Through a comprehensive and detailed analysis, it sheds light on the challenges and misconceptions faced by individuals displaced across borders due to disasters. It offers a thorough examination of existing legislation, policies, and case law at both the national and EU levels, with a particular focus on Italy. By addressing these issues, it provides a valuable insight for academics, policymakers, and decision-makers, advocating for an evolutive approach to protection claims related to disaster displacement. It calls for the dismantling of State-led barriers to asylum, arguing that such measures are neither effective nor human rights compliant.

This book explores why and how, in an era in which conflicts are turning into arenas of strategic competition, international organizations have become the ultimate guardians of liberal peace.International organizations display policy continuity at a time when authoritarian models of conflict resolution are gaining traction thanks to streamlined objectives, fast-paced solutions, and reduced normative commitments. Confronting the challenges posed by illiberal actors, the United Nations and the European Union have entrenched their survival with that of the liberal international order and of liberal peace in particular. In a novel reading of organizational behaviours amid crises, policy continuity is interpreted as the result of “strategic inertia”. This book demonstrates how bureaucratic rules and procedures, including organizational pathologies, are strategically employed to reproduce problem schema and counter illiberal contestation.Combining public policy theories to peace research, this text explores the use of strategic inertia through the crucial case of the United Nations and the European Union in the Sahel. It offers an innovative perspective on the inner mechanisms through which international organizations are adapting to preserve their role and mission within an ever more competitive international environment.
