A deluxe sleeved set that includes a facsimile republication of a classic work on Louis Kahn and an accompanying volume of new writings by colleagues, architects, and the Kahn familyThe Notebooks and Drawings of Louis I. Kahn, originally published in 1962 and long out of print, was the first book on the architect to feature Kahn’s own images and words—and it was Kahn’s favorite book on his work. It includes his early sketches, reproduced at full size, from his European travels in the 1950s as well as renderings of the designs for several of his notable buildings, along with unpublished speeches and excerpts from lectures, radio broadcasts, and other sources. In this magnificent sleeve-encased two-book set, a facsimile of the original publication is accompanied by an illustrated Reader’s Guide that features essays and commentary by writers such as scholar William Whitaker and Pulitzer Prize–winning critic Paul Goldberger, family members, and fellow architects such as Frank Gehry, Tadao Ando, and Denise Scott Brown that contextualize the enormous impact and continuing legacy of one of the twentieth century’s most influential architects. A beautifully produced facsimile of the last known intact sketchbook by J. M. W. TurnerJ. M. W. Turner (1775–1851) seldom left home without a sketchbook. Over the course of his lifetime, he filled more than three hundred, most of them small enough to carry in his pocket. This facsimile represents Turner’s last known intact sketchbook, now in the collection of the Yale Center for British Art. Turner used it on the coast of the English Channel in Kent, in and around Margate, from June to September 1845.The volume is accompanied by a poem in which Tracey Emin (b. 1963) expresses her profound connection with Turner’s work. Emin grew up in Margate, the seaside town that Turner returned to time and again to draw. This presentation of Turner’s sketchbook includes generous margins and blank pages to encourage further sketches, in the spirit of the artist.Published by the Yale Center for British Art/Distributed by Yale University Press

A fresh take on one of contemporary art’s most renowned figures Tracey Emin (b. 1963) is widely known for dynamic and autobiographical works that reflect grief, hope, loss, and love. For more than three decades, her art has challenged stereotypes about female experience and sexuality. Rising up with a cohort dubbed the Young British Artists (YBAs), Emin made her mark in London with sculptural installations that became icons of the 1990s. She went on to explore an exceptional range of media, becoming famous for her neon and textile works. Yet Emin has long thought of painting as central to her artistic practice and since the early 2000s has intensified her focus on the medium in large-scale figurative works rooted in emotion and bodily experience. Published to accompany Emin’s first major exhibition in North America, this generously illustrated volume features an exclusive interview with the artist, places her work in its art-historical context, and opens new avenues for approaching her painting and closely related drawing practice. Draws on the Yale Center for British Art’s rich collection to critically reconsider the vibrant creative exchanges between artists in India, China, and Britain during a period ruthlessly driven by commerce Painters, Ports, and Profits: Artists and the East India Company, 1750–1850 tells the story of the remarkable creative exchanges that coincided with the rise of one of the most ruthless and powerful corporations in history. Scholarship on this period often separates Indian, Chinese, and British artists; Painters, Ports, and Profits instead foregrounds the vital interactions between their practices. Artistic experimentation with papers, pigments, and other materials produced works of astonishing beauty and variety. Compelled by new subjects and techniques, these artists, many now unknown, had a profound effect on visual and material culture within and beyond Asia.Edited by curators Laurel O. Peterson and Holly Shaffer, Painters, Ports, and Profits features more than one hundred objects drawn primarily from the Yale Center for British Art’s collection, including architectural drafts, burnished opaque watercolors, hand-colored aquatints, small and large-scale portraits, and a spectacular thirty-seven-foot-long scroll depicting the city of Lucknow. An international group of scholars, curators, and conservators provide rich commentary based on new research.
