About our authors Coauthors Richard R. Janis and William K.Y. Tao have both taught university courses on mechanical and electrical systems for over 30 years while working as consulting engineers nationally and internationally. Their various courses at Washington University in St. Louis have emphasized the roles of participants in the building process as well as the theories and technologies of system design. In 1989, they authored the first edition of this text in response to the need for a text that emphasizes the Why? and the How? as well as the What? Subsequent editions keep the text up to date with current practices.Author Richard Janis has used this book to teach various architectural and engineering courses using selected materials from the 21 chapters as appropriate. Different combinations of chapters can be used for specific courses. For example, Richard Janis’s courses using materials in this book have included such titles as Energy Effective Building Design, Thermal Comfort (HVAC for architects), HVAC (an engineering deep dive), Power and Light (electrical for architects), Lighting, Electrical Systems in Building, Building Mechanical Systems (including HVAC, plumbing and fire suppression) and Sustainable Systems in Buildings.
