Interest in the childhood evolution of our thinking and knowledge concerning the social world is lively and growing and studies have proliferated for many years. When it was first published in 1981, this book afforded a group of distinguished social scientists the opportunity to reflect on social cognitive development and on the implications their own theoretical positions and research findings might have for this central process. One of its special strengths is the range of the contributors' backgrounds. In addition to specialists, there are students of non-social cognitive development, social anthropology, the 'adult' (non-developmental) social, personality and cognitive psychology. Their readable essays thus offer compelling perspectives and approaches for those interested in the child's construction of social reality.

During the ten years preceding this book's publication in 1984, a good deal of material on Britain's role in Allied relations during the Second World War had become available at the Public Record Office in London. Little of this documentation, however, had yet been published: the series 'Documents on British Foreign Policy' stopped with the outbreak of war in September 1939; there was, therefore, no British equivalent to 'Foreign Relations of the United States' for the war years. This book fills this void, using a selection of documents to illustrate one of the most important themes of British wartime diplomacy: relations with the Soviet Union. Until the publication of this book the interested student or researcher had to be prepared to spend long periods delving into the files of the Public Record Office, or else rely on secondary material.

Comprised of original research in diverse genres and medias, Women and Media: International Perspectives brings together eight international scholars to explore key issues of the gender-media relation. Provides important insights into how gender is implicated in media industries.Address key issues of the gender-media relation, from an analysis of news media’s coverage of women politicians, to the marketing of ‘girl power’, to strategizing for equality in newsrooms.Highlights the theme that media have the potential both to reinforce the status quo in power arrangements in society but also to contribute to new, more egalitarian ones.Includes an introduction by the editors that carefully maps the contours of the international struggle between feminists and the media, section overviews, bibliographies, key terms, and discussion questions.
